Turkey is one of the top destinations in the world. Most passengers use airlines such as Turkish Airlines, Pegasus Airlines, Atlas Global and SAS, British Airways etc. Corendon Airlines, Sunexpress and Onur Air are often used for charter vacations.
Traveling to and from Turkey is easy. But you may run in to problems if you flight gets delayed, cancelled of overbooked. To claim compensation for flights to and from Turkey is a legal nightmare. These flights are sometimes bound by Turkish aviation rules and sometimes by European aviation rules. This complicates things for legal firms.

When your flight is cancelled or delayed from EU
You are entitled to compensation, if your flight is overbooked, cancelled or delayed for at least three hours. Remember that rule only applies when your departure point is from a European country, or when you travel with a European airline companies.
So, you are entitled to compensation through European aviation rules, if you travel from a European country. You flight must be overbooked, cancelled or delayed for at least 3 hours upon arrival. The European aviation rules also apply to Turkish airline companies, if the delay happens from a European country.
But how do we claim if the delay occurs with a Turkish airline company and are the rules the same as in EU?
Delay, cancellation or ovebookings with departure from Turkey
The 3-hour rule also applies to flights from Turkey - as long as you travel with a European airline company (SAS, British Airways or Lufthansa for instance). Things get a bit more complicated when you travel with non-European airlines from Turkey.
In 2018 the Turkish courts have decided that flight delays no longer entitles you to compensation – unless you miss your connection flight, or your flight has been overbooked or cancelled. Remember that this only applies for non-European airlines.
You may be entitled to compensation, if you have one or more connecting flights. You may be entitled to compensation, if your first flight is delayed, and you cannot reach your next flight. But this rule only applies when you have less than one hour between your flights. You are entitled to compensation, if you miss your connecting flight and you arrive at your final destination 3 hours later than scheduled. The amount you are entitled to is:
- 100 euro per person for domestic flights.
- 250 euro per person for flights with a distance of less than 1,500 km.
- 400 euro per person for flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km.
- 600 euro per person for flights with a distance of more than 3,500 km (outside of EU).
Do not forget that the airline must provide you with food and beverages, if you are delayed for more than two hours. Remember to save your receipts if you pay for extra costs. Compensation can be received if the airline can be held accountable for the flight delay.
